Minimal and essential
Few galleries carry the moral weight of Marian Goodman Gallery. Considered one of the most influential gallerists in contemporary art, Marian Goodman was known for introducing European artists such as Gerhard Richter, Joseph Beuys, and Marcel Broodthaers to the United States — a transatlantic bridge she built from sheer conviction starting in 1977. The gallery has represented artists including Steve McQueen, Tacita Dean, Pierre Huyghe, William Kentridge, Nan Goldin, and Julie Mehretu. In 2023, the gallery relocated its New York space to 385 Broadway, occupying two floors totalling 2,800 square meters, renovated by the architecture firm StudioMDA, with two floors of public exhibition space, a library, and an archive. It is, in every sense, a monument to what a gallery can be.
