Ca’ di Dio Venezia

Vibe

Contemporary lagoon retreat

Location

Riva Ca' di Dio, 2183, 30122 Venezia VE, Italy

Style

Modern and serene

Positioned where the Arsenale — Venice’s historic shipyard and design district — meets the lagoon promenade, Ca’ di Dio is a 13th-century structure reimagined for the present tense by the inimitable Patricia Urquiola. The brief was deliberately counter-intuitive: neither forcibly modern nor theatrically historic, but something truer — a dialogue between the building’s austere original bones and the refinement of a Venetian palace, expressed through the gradations of lagoon water, transparencies of Murano glass, and the warmth of salvaged wood. The lobby was carved from an ancient church. Three distinct dining and drinking spaces orbit a courtyard with original wells and herringbone brick paths: VERO for elevated Venetian cuisine, Essentia for intimate breakfasts in a cloister garden, Alchemia Bar for a signature cocktail as the light shifts over the water. The Pura City Spa tends to the body; curated lagoon excursions — to Lio Piccolo’s salt marshes and artichoke fields, through the Castello district by private boat — tend to the spirit. A member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World with genuine sustainability credentials, Ca’ di Dio is the quiet argument that Venice’s future can be as beautiful as its past.
